We got the 50K for Kerrigan's Grant!

You will never believe this everybody! Remember the Man & Woman of the year campaign for Leukemia/Lymphoma Society? I was hoping to raise $50,000 in honor of Kerrigan to name a research grant after him. Well, we had about $41,000 and I thought we wouldn't get it...we only had til June 30th. But my awesome, terrific, wonderful, amazing fellow candidates...Dr. Dave Roer, Dave Bates, Kim Powell, Lisa Dennison, Roxann Patrick, John Reynolds, Randy Carter, Barb Strady Rowland and Mike Suttman...came up with the extra money. After working tirelessly for 10 weeks for their own campaigns, instead of relaxing and calling it a day, they came together and called in favors to help me get to 50 K for Kerrigan....you guys are truly amazing....as are all of you great listeners...we ALL did it together! Let's make blood cancers go away once and for all, so people like Kerrigan can stay!

Thank YOU everybody!!!

As you probably saw from the goober looking picture of me and the great one of Kerrigan below, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society grand finale was surprising! We won! We did it! You guys and me and Kerrigan! Together, we raised over $40,000 for LLS! So close to that 50K I wanted to name a research grant after Kerrigan! But enough that they named me "Woman of the Year!" Can you believe that? Me?! But, like I told Kerrigan, inside "woman" is "man" and he's incredible too...Such an inspiration for everyone. He is the reason I accepted the nomination as a candidate anyway, you know. My goal is to make blood cancer go away so Kerrigan can stay!

going on vakay now....I think I may have earned this one! See you soon!

Last call for Kerrigan's grant! And he's still in remission!

Hey everyone! I want to thank you for all your kind words and generous donations for the "Man & Woman of the Year" fundraising campaign for Leukemia/Lymphoma in honor of Kerrigan. I'm gonna be honest. It's hard to raise money when times are tough...unfortunately, people still get sick no matter how high gas prices get. Kerrigan got some great news this week, he is still in remission. Your support has been terrific, and I thought getting the $50,000 to name a grant after him would be easy! If every listener donated just $5, we'd be set. But it's not worked out that way.

I'm not complaining at all! I'm very proud of what we've done...but we are far short of that goal..and Wednesday is the last day for donations! I look at it this way, every dollar we raised is one dollar closer to a cure for blood cancers, right!

If you get a chance, click on our Fight Back with 5! Pass it on, just read it...or if you hate donating online or don't want to use your credit card, checks or cash are great! Make it out to "Leukemia/Lymphoma Society" send it to me, Nancy Wilson at K-99.1-FM..1414 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton 45420. Maybe we can make a miracle happen for Kerrigan!!!

Howdy! You ever get so nutty busy you don't make good time for your friends? I have not been a very good friend to you guys, and there's SO much going on to share with you! First, our Fight Back with 5 fundraising campaign for Leukemia/Lymphoma is going great! I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate you helping out...

The cool thing this week, if we get a high number of people who donate online...not a high number of dollars, although that would be cool (where's my peeps who won the lottery in Piqua?) but a high number of donations, LLS will give us an extra $350! That's really great. Check it out here...

http://soh.dayton.llsevent.org/pledge/index.cfm?mid=FIGHTBACKWITHNANCY

I really really would love to get $50 thousand, I don't care if I win the title of "Woman of the Year" as much as I want to have a research grant named after Kerrigan. We're halfway thru the campaign right now, and we have $15,000. Looks kind of rough, but I think of it this way, any money is that much closer to getting rid of blood cancer, right? So, if you can, help out...if you don't want to do it on computer, send a check to us at the station. make it out to

Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, and send it to me at 1414 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton 45420.

Wednesday is a huge day for our Buffalo Wild Wing "Takeover". John Slaugenhaupt (no idea if I spelled that right) is letting us "takeover" the store on Wilmington Pike in the Sugarcreek Plaza. LLS gets 20% of all the sales that day! Woo hoo! Kerrigan and I will be there about 6...maybe we'll see you? Here's the deal...you need a coupon in order to get the donation counted....Grab your coupon here! Print it out and bring it in!!!

Also, if you scroll down our page after you read this, you'll see some other fun stuff we're doing for LLS! You can Karaoke for Kerrigan or Bowl with the Stars or eat ice cream! Yum! Our friends at the Dairy Queen in Brookville are having a HUGE day Sunday, May 24th..you can get all the details by going to the "best bets" part on the station home page.

What else? Oh yeah! American Idol finale party! Our great pals at Fricker's on Woodman Drive are allowing us back next Wednesday night for the big show! Who will it be? Adam and.....? I hope Kris!

Gosh, I've been yammering on y'all! But great to talk with you! I'll be better about it!

Live like you were dying

Since returning to work from my illness many people have asked me about the details of why I was off the air for the better part of four months.

I've always considered myself an active physically fit person. A regular at the gym and an avid cyclist a participant in century rides of a hundred miles in a day. That's why in the spring of last year I knew something was wrong when I struggled to mow the lawn without a rest period.

My symptoms included shortness of breath and unusual fatigue. After passing a battery of tests for heart disease, some blood abnormalities were discovered. I was anemic and waiting for the results. After four agonizing days the answer was Multiple Myeloma.

Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells. Myeloma starts in the marrow, which is the spongy tissue in the center of the bones. There is no cure. A patient with myeloma has an average life expectancy of four to seven years. Nine thousand Americans will die this year from myeloma. Eventually the cancer cells crowd out the healthy blood cells boring holes in the bones. Many patients with myeloma can suffer broken bones by doing ordinary everyday activities. X-rays showed I had lesions in my legs, hip arms and skull.

Local recommendations led me to seek treatment at Ohio State University's The James Cancer hospital. The first form of treatment was a nine week Chemotherapy regimen.

Unfortunately this yielded no results. The cancer was continuing to mount, and I had progressed from stage two to stage three. Myeloma only has four stages.

The next order of treatment was to prepare for a stem cell transplant. I was given fourteen shots of drug which was administered to increase new healthy blood cells which would collected, frozen and stored away. I was then given a high dose form of Chemo called Melphan. Basically what happens next is the drug kills everything in your system. Then the new healthy cells which were collected and frozen are put back into your system.

Your hair falls out you become deathly sick. Over the next six weeks in the hospital I lost 30 pounds and was living on a steady diet yogurt and jello. Complications followed which included pneumonia and the loss of feeling in my feet.

Eventually I have regained my strength. Thanks to the staff at The James and eleven blood transfusions over six months of treatment. I still have kidney issues. Since my kidneys had to work overtime to filter the bone dust out of the blood, I now have stage four kidney failure. This could lead to the need for dialysis or kidney transplant.

The good news is the stem cell transplant was a success. I am currently in remission.

Cancer has changed my life. For the most part, I have taken my health for granted. I now view everyday as a gift.

I don't mind the birds singing in the tree next to my bedroom window, waking me up to early on a Sunday morning. I sit on my backyard deck looking up in the blue sky and white clouds. I watch airplanes flying by leaving a vapor trail. No longer wishing I was on the plane traveling to a far away destination, rather just hoping the passengers have a safe journey. I love hearing my spouse Monique laughing heartily in the family room while watching reruns of Will and Grace. I love walking in on my youngest daughter and step daughter and watching their faces turn red when I over hear them talking about boys.

I love when my two college age kids hug me and tell me they love me before they leave the house. I love telling my parents I love them every time I hang up the phone.

In my moments of weakness, I sometimes feel sorry for myself. Monique has been there for me not only as a caregiver, but also reminding me to stay positive and view each obstacle as another hurtle to overcome.

I don't want cancer. But I'm glad it choose me instead of Monique, one of my children, or siblings. I love them to much to watch them go thru this battle. I hope for a cure and pray for their continued good health. I hope I will be living to see my youngest graduate. I guess I should be more concerned with the struggling 401 k. But my chances of reaching retirement currently are slim to none. I am honored to be the Honorary Chairperson for the relay for life. I hope you will join me in the fight against cancer by donations, volunteering or participating in a fundraiser.

One day I hope to be strong enough to ride in another bike tour. Unlike the great Lance Armstrong, I will no longer be concerned about finishing among the leaders. But like Lance Armstrong, I'm sure I'll enjoy every mile of the ride.
